They're back. Commonly known as an asp, these furry little caterpillars can send you to an emergency room screaming and writhing in pain, and this area has an abundance of them. The asp begins appearing in late spring through early summer and can usually be found hanging around in shade trees or bushes, and occasionally on the ground. According to the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service, they prefer oak, pecan, elm, and hackberry trees. They may look harmless, and even enticing to touch or pick up due to their hairy bodies.
